At school, Andrew had no clear idea of a future career but he did know he wanted to work and do something practical. His grandad was an engineer, and Andrew had spent time with him helping him tinker with old machinery. He was interested in understanding how things worked so his school Careers Advisor suggested an engineering apprenticeship. He was given a list of companies in Huddersfield who ran apprenticeship schemes and he applied for them all.
Andrew joined the scheme in 2015 and, after learning foundation skills in his first year, chose to pursue the Metrology Pathway. His apprenticeship ignited a real interest in measurement, and he became fascinated by the micro levels of precision that could be achieved on the measuring machines. During his apprenticeship he completed a Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering, a Level 3 in Inspection/Metrology and a HNC in Mechanical Engineering.
When Andrew graduated in 2019, he became a CMM Programmer and was then made CMM Process Lead. He completed a Manufacturing Engineering degree at Sheffield Hallam University and was recently promoted to Metrology Lead. Andrew is now responsible for the implementation of key processes relating to metrology including programming, scheduling and maintenance.
Andrew comments “I’m so glad I achieved a place at Reliance on the apprenticeship scheme. It enabled me to discover a passion for Metrology which I never knew I had! Metrology is definitely my thing and I look forward to continuing to learn all aspects to become the best I can.”
