About The Role
We have an opportunity for a placement student with a proven interest in electronics/mechatronics to join our Engineering Department. The placement duration will be for 12 months (with some flexibility) and is based on-site at Reliance Precision Limited, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Electronics.
The Project
This placement project will focus on is the design and use of a flexible embedded electronic servo control unit (eescu) for motion control. See diagram below.
The goal of the project is to develop a flexible embedded electronic servo control unit (eescu) and a system to test and prove its capabilities. It is anticipated the project will require exposure to, knowledge of and willingness to learn:
- Servo control theory and modelling.
- Servo control methods for electronic motors e.g. PID and FOC control.
- Electronic circuit design.
- The implementation of control algorithms in embedded firmware.
- Test rig and method development followed by testing, data collection, analysis and performance verification.

Outside of this project there may be opportunities to work on other activities including:
- Design and completion of performance characterisation tests for new products.
- Development of technology demonstrators to support the sales process.
Skills and Qualifications
The role is open to students of any year. The key attributes we are looking for are a passion for engineering and an aptitude for technical communication and learning new skills, underpinned by a strong work ethic.
Useful knowledge and experience include:
- Control theory and system modelling.
- Experience working with micro controllers.
- Experience working with motor drives.

Hours of Work
This role is 38 hours per week and the duration is approximately 12 months. There is some flexibility around the start and end dates to suit the successful candidate.
Working hours are:
- Monday to Thursday: 08:00-17:00
- Friday: 08:00-12:00
