In an evening which showcased the best in British industry, Finmeccanica-Selex ES won their category with the support of Reliance and other supply chain associates. Reliance was cited by the judges as a key contributor because Finmeccanica-Selex ES's testimonial was supplier driven. The judges viewed this as far more compelling evidence and a decisive feature in presenting the award.

Reliance Precision Ltd has worked with Finmeccanica-Selex ES for a considerable number of years with the relationship gaining significant momentum in 2008 when Finmeccanica-Selex ES invited their supply chain to participate in Finmeccanica-Selex ES's Growth Readiness Review (GRR) project. This initiative created an ongoing culture where the sharing of knowledge and skills became standard practice and where a clear understanding of responsibilities and working relationships was evident at all levels. Today, this means Reliance feels confident in requesting changes or offering suggestions and improvements; a situation only made possible through… 1 Fri, 09 Jan 2015 11:33:00 +0000 Reliance offers Linear Guides for High Load Applications
Closer integration of products has led to a need for linear motion solutions that offer high speed without compromising rigidity, torsional resistance or life. Reliance Precision's range of linear guides are designed for high load, high moment applications and this is made possible due to a unique re-circulating ball design in the carriage which delivers smooth motion, low noise and high accuracy. The guides provide high levels of stiffness to enable the carriage to operate at higher speeds. Forty five degree contact angles and a gothic profile design incorporated into the carriage result in a multi-direction equalisation of force.

The linear guides consist of a stainless steel rail and built-in lubrication reservoirs to provide an effective, low maintenance solution. Specially designed seals prevent dust and foreign objects from entering the system.

Design engineers can integrate linear guides within higher level assemblies and Reliance Precision has successfully developed a motorised anti-backlash X-Y stage with a positional accuracy of 0.01mm, unloaded repeatability of 0.005mm and a load capacity of 50N. Selected from Reliance's comprehensive catalogue of components, the assembly utilised extra wide slides to cater for moment loads. Internal screw motors and anti-backlash leadscrews provided accurate positional repeatability.

Linear guides are available… 1 Thu, 11 Dec 2014 14:34:00 +0000 Reli-a-Flex® Couplings Survive ‘Robot Wars’
Originally broadcast in the UK, the 'Robot Wars' TV format was subsequently picked up by the Netherlands. 'Robot Wars: The Dutch battles' brought together a range of amateur and professional engineers who constructed a variety of imaginative robotic machines designed to overcome or destroy each other. Dutch Robot Wars now continues un-televised as a vibrant community, participating in a calendar of live robot events.

Marien van der Meer is a member of Dutch Team FFR and built 'Gator', one of two robots, so that his young sons could participate in the games. Unfortunately, the robots had a weakness in that the transmission was frequently damaged as it crashed to the arena floor. It was found that the wheels' direct connection to the shaft/motor assembly often resulted in broken transmissions; presenting ongoing cost issues for Marien and the team.

While Marien was searching for a solution to prevent the transmission from breaking, he came across a sample Reli-a-Flex aluminium coupling that Reliance had given him years before at a trade show. He subsequently contacted Reliance's design team for advice; enquiring whether this type of coupling would be robust enough to solve the problem:

"After contacting Reliance, they sent me four Reli-a… 1 Tue, 09 Dec 2014 11:07:00 +0000 Ventilation Screws from Reliance Precision
Mainly used in clean room outgassing chamber environments, Reliance's stainless steel ventilation socket head cap screws are drilled through the central axis to assist cavity ventilation in vacuum and high vacuum assemblies and components. Also available with a slotted head, they are primarily designed to remove or release trapped gas which may otherwise lead to contamination and virtual leaks within clean critical systems. Ventilation screws are often used to release pockets of gas at the base of blind, tapped holes.

Ventilated screws require no specialist tools or installation techniques and are manufactured from A4-70 austenitic stainless steel. They are produced to ISO 4762 and 700 MPa (minimum) tensile strength. The threads are rolled to give excellent surface finish, increased hardness and superior thread strength. Metric screw threads to BS 3643 Pt2 are available from Reliance in sizes M1.6 to M6, with imperial sizes and alternative materials available on request. Sizes outside the standard catalogue range can also be requested.

1 Mon, 08 Dec 2014 12:15:00 +0000 Reliance Supports the Movember Foundation
It was earlier this year that Reliance's Michael Clark suggested he might take part in the Movember charity event; an annual global fundraising project "committed to changing the face of men's health." Sponsorship is attracted by the participants growing moustaches throughout November and awareness is raised of the health risks affecting men. Funds go to support 800 programmes in 21 countries where there are critical key challenges. The foundation is primarily concerned with developing an understanding of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health issues.

Mick, who joined Reliance's turning department earlier this year, saw first hand what a lack of awareness and experience of health issues can cause when, in a previous employment, a colleague developed testicular cancer. He felt that backing the Movember campaign at Reliance would be an ideal way to help the charity achieve their aims. That idea was supported as numbers swelled quickly into a twenty plus group collectively known as the 'Reliance Moustache Massif'.

The 'RMM' cultivated moustaches of many shapes and sizes, with some members unwittingly taking on the appearance of 1970s film extras. Towards the end of the month, most had managed a respectable growth, but more importantly, they had stimulated discussion… 1 Fri, 14 Nov 2014 09:25:00 +0000 Reliance Plays a Part in Rosetta’s Historic Mission
November 12th 2014 marked a historic date for the world as news arrived of the success of the Rosetta satellite mission and the landing of the Philae probe onto the surface of Comet 67P.

The progress of Rosetta has been followed with interest at Reliance Precision in Huddersfield where gears were manufactured for use on the satellite. The team at Reliance is thrilled to be contributing to such a prestigious project as Managing Director, Andrew Wright, explains: "There is something very satisfying about knowing our components are not only performing perfectly after 10 years, but are doing so in deep space at a distance of around 500 million km from our works here in Huddersfield".

The gears have played a vital role throughout the satellite's journey in rotating the two 15 meter solar panels, enabling them to perpetually face the sun: a crucial function given that Rosetta has no internal batteries and relies entirely on solar energy for electricity.

Since Reliance first manufactured the Rosetta gears in 1999 the company has continued to support the space industry, supplying custom-built gears for a variety of satellite applications. Technical Director, Ian Laidler, who has recently chaired the UK's Space Mechanisms Working Group explains:… 1 Mon, 10 Nov 2014 11:19:00 +0000 Reliance Supports Next Generation Treatment for Prostate Cancer
Reliance Precision is continuing its collaboration with French company EDAP TMS in providing mechatronic components and design support to help launch Focal One®, the latest generation of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) systems designed to treat localised prostate cancer. Focal One® brings together all requirements for accurate and MR-fused imaging; incorporating a precise and efficient, non invasive, therapeutic procedure and end-of-treatment validation imaging. Urologists use a PC to identify the area damaged by lesions and ultrasound waves destroy the affected area. Unlike radiation treatment, this procedure specifically targets the abnormal area, leaving healthy surrounding tissue undamaged. Studies have shown that following treatment, 95% of men experience full recovery within a twelve month period and suffer no major side effects.

EDAP identified the need for a smaller, more integrated device which would also benefit from being mobile and, following a successful early involvement with the Ablatherm®, a previous HIFU unit, EDAP chose to return to Reliance for further technical advice and product supply.

For the Focal One®, the efficacy of previous models was to be maintained but within an even tighter working envelope. This can significantly influence the oil distribution in the reservoir and it is important to understand this in detail to design efficient oil recovery schemes. The paper investigated the influence of semi-diurnal lunar tides on this transition zone.

Stefan Iglauer and Ann Muggeridge constructed a model that would accurately mimic these sinusoidal changes in height and pressure. Three cylindrical columns, one metre high with a 100mm internal diameter were filled with sand and a varying change in air/water contact was applied for 90 days. A reservoir was connected to the columns which moved up and down in a way that simulated the M2 semidiurnal lunar tide. This was made possible by mounting the reservoir on a platform attached to a linear slide which was in turn connected to Reliance's Cool Muscle Motor.

It was the accuracy… 1 Mon, 27 Oct 2014 16:03:00 +0000 Reliance to Exhibit at Precisiebeurs 2014
Reliance Precision Limited will be exhibiting its breadth of specialist design, manufacturing and assembly capabilities at the Precisiebeurs exhibition, to be held at the NH Conference Centre Koningshof, Veldhoven, The Netherlands on the 12th and 13th November.

High performance instrumentation and high vacuum mechanisms will be featured including gears, geared systems, electro-mechanical, opto-mechanical sub-systems.

Reliance is an established supplier to global prime contractors and OEMs in the scientific, aerospace and defence industries, actively engaged in the SC21 Supply Chain Programme, having achieved the silver award.

Visit Reliance Precision Limited at stand 147.

1 Fri, 26 Sep 2014 08:18:00 +0100 Reliance Precision Fishing Trophy 2014
Employees from Reliance Precision recently enjoyed a great day's fishing in the beautiful surroundings of Magdale Pond in Honley, Holmfirth. Complementing Reliance's standard range of gears, couplings and hardware products, these low maintenance actuators are quieter, more efficient and more durable when compared to standard Acme thread and bronze nut configurations. Captive, non-captive and external shaft leadscrew actuators allow the conversion of rotary to linear motion to occur within the motor by means of an integrated motor and nut. Zero transmission of error is a benefit of this design which eliminates the need for shaft coupling or shaft and pulley arrangements.

Reliance can supply linear actuators that are ideal for high performance, accurate transfer of motion within a small working envelope. Typical applications include X-Y tables, medical and scientific instrumentation and other applications that require a combination of precise positioning, rapid motion and long life. The hybrid linear actuators are available in NEMA frame sizes 8 to 34, with the size 34 (87 mm2) able to produce up to 222 N of force. 400 full steps per revolution are programmable, as are stepped increments down to as little as 0.003 mm.

Bespoke designs can be modified to… 1 Thu, 21 Aug 2014 11:06:00 +0100 Customer Focused Investment in Manufacturing and Metrology

Reliance Precision, supplier to the global defence and scientific instrument sectors, is currently implementing a phased programme of customer focused investment in manufacturing and metrology equipment.

Quality has always been the driving force for Reliance; recently, in response to an intensely cost driven market, the company set itself the twin tasks of remaining commercially competitive while simultaneously increasing quality requirements and performance. Developed over a number of years, the range is ideally suited to scientific instrumentation where accurate positional feedback is of vital importance. The miniature range is especially useful in environments operating within a minimal working envelope.

Reliance anti-backlash gears have a 2 piece construction method. The fixed plate and hub are manufactured from the same piece of material, providing maximum ruggedness between the hub and the fixed plate; only the floating plate is separate. Many other gear suppliers adopt a 3 piece construction method where the plate, hub and floating plate are manufactured separately and swaging is typically used to join the hub to the fixed plate. This can compromise the ruggedness of the jointing method and is not as reliable in-service as a one piece manufacturing method.

Rotational tension allows the mechanism to continually adjust during the working life of the gear train. This is beneficial in aerospace and defence applications where steel anti-backlash gears are able to compensate for the thermal expansion and contraction of light aluminium housings.

When… 1 Thu, 29 May 2014 08:37:00 +0100 Reliance Precision Announces Major Investment Strategy
Reliance Precision is underpinning its standing as a leading player in the defence, aerospace, medical and science instrumentation sectors by announcing a major investment programme in manufacturing and metrology equipment.

A robust heritage base, combined with an expanding customer portfolio, has determined investment strategies which will future proof Reliance's business in the supply of precise, accurate, electro-mechanical assemblies and components.

With a multi-million pound manufacturing investment plan phased over a 4 year period, the strategy of combining high end precision manufacturing equipment with lean techniques means the company can uphold the high standards demanded by the specialist markets in which it operates. This new configuration includes a special adapter plate that allows the smaller 36mm OD unit to replace 42mm and 46mm units in existing applications.

Performance of the 36mm G4 linear actuator not only exceeds the performance of comparable size actuators, it approaches the performance of larger 42mm and 46mm linear actuators from various manufacturers. The 36mm unit with the integrated adapter plate allows users to replace existing 42 and 46mm units easily by using the same bolt pattern and pilot surface.

Among the advantages of substituting the 36mm G4 linear actuator are a smaller linear actuator body, which is especially important when space is a premium, and a lower cost system compared with the larger-size units, without sacrificing performance or lifespan. Force output range for the G4 linear actuator is from 70N to 260N.

The G4 linear actuator architecture employs the latest technologies to extend reliability and meet high-performance requirements. For designers working on prototyping projects Reliance now holds stock lengths of guides which can be quickly cut to length to suit individual requirements, offering a cost-effective, short lead-time solution for low volumes.

Innovation in miniaturisation of products has led to a need for linear motion solutions that offer high speed without compromising rigidity, torsional resistance or life. The Reliance miniature guides operate by two rows of circulating ball bearings mating with a 45 degree Gothic style profile. This gives multi-direction equalisation of force, which enables high velocity motion with low friction. Miniature operating environments dictate minimal clearance settings, and an optional pre-loading of the bearings can be requested in conditions that demand additional stiffness and precision. Further options include variations in carriage sealing systems, lubrication and reinforcement.

Reliance's aim is to supply standard components that can be integrated seamlessly into existing mechanisms and its range of miniature linear guides follow that philosophy, providing a 'drop in replacement ' product so customers can continue production with minimal down time.

The miniature linear guides offer excellent price and performance; all guides are inspected and tested for… 1 Mon, 30 Jul 2012 15:02:00 +0100 Reliance To Exhibit at Farnborough International Air Show
Reliance Precision will be exhibiting its breadth of specialist design and manufacturing capabilities at Farnborough International Air Show from 9th to 13th July.

High performance aerospace and defence mechanisms will be featured including gears, geared systems, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical sub-systems.

Reliance is an established supplier to global prime contractors and OEMs in the aerospace and defence industries. In this new version, the higher torque capacity is achieved by using multi-beam helixes, with the largest offering a maximum torque of up to 22Nm. These new couplings combine high torsional stiffness with low radial stiffness, thus protecting the bearings and the shafts of the connected drive parts. The couplings are manufactured in one piece, having no moving parts avoids friction loss and the design guarantees good vibration damping.

The bore of the helix section is standard, allowing shafts to be placed into the coupling without affecting function. Feather key grooves are also available. The couplings can be supplied in a range of sizes with outer diameters from 9.5mm up to 38.1mm and an overall length from 14.2mm up to 66.7mm. Bores are available from 2mm up to 22mm, with clamp or set screw type fixing hubs. Alternative bore combinations are also possible.

The couplings can be supplied in aluminum or stainless steel, allowing them to be used in various applications such… 1 Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:12:00 +0100 Reliance Exhibits at MEDTEC 2011
Reliance Precision Mechatronics (RPM) will be exhibiting its range of components and assemblies at MEDTEC, the UK's medical technology and manufacturing exhibition, to be held at the NEC. Products will include leadscrews, couplings, gears, and slides.

A major feature at this year's exhibition is RPM's latest product integration capability, demonstrated by RSL Steeper's bebionic prosthetic hand, the finger and thumb actuators of which are supplied by RPM.

The specialist manufacturing capabilities of RPM's parent company, Reliance Precision Limited, will also be featured, including recently expanded cleanroom facilities, dedicated to opto-mechanical assembly.

Visit Reliance Precision Mechatronics at MEDTEC, April 6-7 2011, stand 1321.

1 Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:11:00 +0100 Reliance Showcases bebionic Hand At MEDTEC 2011
Reliance Precision Mechatronics is proud to feature the RSL Steeper bebionic hand at this year's MEDTEC exhibition.
