Reliance Precision Limited - News http://www.reliance.co.uk/ Fri, 19 Apr 2013 09:33:00 +0100 Reliance Precision Receives Prestigious Health and Safety Award <p>Reliance Precision Limited has been awarded the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Silver award.</p> <p>The safety charity, which has a 57 year history and has the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK, has undertaken an assessment of Reliance's occupational health and safety management systems and culture,&nbsp;and a review of performance in terms of accident rates and number of serious incidents over the last five years.</p> <p>The scheme not only looked at accident records, but also Reliance's overarching health and safety management systems; including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.</p> <p>Andrew Wright, who recently joined Reliance as Managing Director, firmly believes in promoting a strong culture of health and safety in the workplace: "I am delighted that Reliance Precision has achieved the RoSPA silver award. We work hard to keep safety at the front of our minds and it is encouraging to gain recognition for our good work in this area. We will continue to focus on "near-miss" reporting and encouraging all employees to make suggestions to improve safety. This is our way of keeping safety at the top of our priorities and helping retain a good performance."</p> <p>David Rawlins, RoSPA awards manager&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/128/reliance+precision+receives+prestigious+health+and+safety+award Thu, 04 Apr 2013 08:24:00 +0100 Apprentices Discover the Value of Teamwork <p>The Ocean Youth Trust North provides an innovative way of helping young people achieve greater confidence and social skills through the unique medium of ocean sailing. Having recently celebrated 25 years since launch, they estimate that over 10,000 young people have sailed on the vessel; benefitting from the life changing effects of their residential voyages.</p> <p>Such a busy sailing calendar means that the James Cook undergoes regular periods of scheduled maintenance. This is where Tom Broom, Bradley Jessop and David Black; apprentices from Reliance Precision in Huddersfield, provided a helping hand. The apprentices took a 3 day break from their regular duties at Reliance to join staff and other volunteers aboard the vessel. Docked at the mouth of the River Tyne, they helped perform essential maintenance tasks such as the de-rusting of metal parts on the deck and re-painting.</p> <p>As well as picking up some valuable practical skills, the apprentices had to use their own initiative. For Tom, it was the first time he had travelled a considerable distance alone and had to organise his own travel arrangements. The scheme highlighted the need for working cooperatively as a team in an environment where everyone took responsibility for their assigned tasks.&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/127/apprentices+discover+the+value+of+teamwork Mon, 25 Feb 2013 15:53:00 +0000 Reliance Hosts Men’s Health Awareness Day <p>On the 25th February, Reliance Precision UK and Ireland held a Men's Health Awareness day in memory of an employee who had died recently of cancer. The coupling selector enables the designers to create their own unique Reli-a-Flex&reg; coupling with exact specifications for the application in hand, rather than using a coupling with a similar specification which could potentially compromise the design.</p> <p>The original range includes outside diameters from 13mm to 40mm and the additional micro sizes now available are 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. These couplings retain all the advantages of Reli-a-Flex's patented design, and are ideal for the accurate, miniature motion control applications demanded by the printing, medical and scientific instrument markets.</p> <p>Other one piece couplings currently on the market may outwardly resemble the Reli-a-Flex&reg; at first glance, but there is one vital difference. The patented slot design on the Reli-a-Flex&reg; maintains a constant pivot length which minimises stress variations. On the Reli-a-Flex&reg; the pivot points travel back and forward without changing the centre piece angle,&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/118/reliance+expands+its+range+of+reli-a-flex+precision+couplings Thu, 13 Sep 2012 11:00:00 +0100 Reliance Receives Supplier Excellence Award <p>SELEX Galileo, a Finmeccanica Company, has named Reliance Precision Ltd. the "Laser UK Supplier of the Year 2011". This new configuration includes a special adapter plate that allows the smaller 36mm OD unit to replace 42mm and 46mm units in existing applications.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Performance of the 36mm G4 linear actuator not only exceeds the performance of comparable size actuators, it approaches the performance of larger 42mm and 46mm linear actuators from various manufacturers. The 36mm unit with the integrated adapter plate allows users to replace existing 42 and 46mm units easily by using the same bolt pattern and pilot surface.&nbsp;</p> <p>Among the advantages of substituting the 36mm G4 linear actuator are a smaller linear actuator body, which is especially important when space is a premium, and a lower cost system compared with the larger-size units, without sacrificing performance or lifespan. Force output range for the G4 linear actuator is from 70N to 260N.</p> <p>The G4 linear actuator architecture employs the latest technologies to extend reliability and meet high-performance requirements. The design utilises optimised tooth geometry along with high-energy neodymium&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/113/introducing+a+36mm+linear+actuator+configuration+that+replaces+existing+42mm+packages Fri, 03 Aug 2012 09:26:00 +0100 Stringent Quality and Process Control Prevents Contamination <p>A laser based targeting system in a military aircraft and a mass spectrometer, used for environmental and food safety monitoring, are both applications where contamination in the production process could potentially cause operational failure.&nbsp; Systems and instruments such as these contain complex clean assemblies, often with expensive components which have specific handling and process requirements. Gears with specialist coatings, for example, demand high standards of cleanliness and surface preparation in order to ensure adhesion.&nbsp; Ion transport systems operating in a high vacuum, such as those found in the mass spectrometer, have their own unique set of cleanliness requirements to ensure effective vacuum performance and electrical charging.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>High levels of cleanliness and robust process control are often essential requirements of the scientific instrument, semi-conductor, defence and photonics industries, where the effects of contaminants can lead to equipment malfunction and performance degradation.&nbsp; Whilst considerable variety exists in providing "clean" solutions, common practices and techniques link the diverse range of end products.</p> <p>The defence industry refers to Foreign Object Debris, the semi-conductor industry refers to Foreign Body Analysis; slightly different terminology, but a shared strategic issue.&nbsp; Cleanliness means different things to different people in different industries; there is no universal definition.&nbsp; The management&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/112/stringent+quality+and+process+control+prevents+contamination Tue, 31 Jul 2012 15:48:00 +0100 Introducing the PCM7539X IDEA™ Drive Stepper Motor Controller <p>Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Inc., a premier manufacturer of engineered linear motion products, announces the RoHS compliant PCM7539X IDEATM programmable stepper motor drive, capable of a 75Vdc input voltage and a max output current of 3.85A RMS. For designers working on prototyping projects Reliance now holds stock lengths of guides which can be quickly cut to length to suit individual requirements, offering a cost-effective, short lead-time solution for low volumes.</p> <p>Innovation in miniaturisation of products has led to a need for linear motion solutions that offer high speed without compromising rigidity, torsional resistance or life. The Reliance miniature guides operate by two rows of circulating ball bearings mating with a 45 degree Gothic style profile. This gives multi-direction equalisation of force, which enables high velocity motion with low friction. Miniature operating environments dictate minimal clearance settings, and an optional pre-loading of the bearings can be requested in conditions that demand additional stiffness and precision. Further options include variations in carriage sealing systems, lubrication and reinforcement.</p> <p>Reliance's aim is to supply standard components that can be integrated seamlessly into existing mechanisms and its range of miniature linear guides follow that philosophy, providing a 'drop in replacement ' product so customers can continue production with minimal down time.</p> <p>The miniature linear guides offer excellent price and performance; all guides are inspected and tested for&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/110/customised+linear+guides+-+a+cost-effective%2C+versatile+prototyping+solution Mon, 30 Jul 2012 15:02:00 +0100 Reliance To Exhibit at Farnborough International Air Show <p>Reliance Precision will be exhibiting its breadth of specialist design and manufacturing capabilities at Farnborough International Air Show from 9th to 13th July.</p> <p>High performance aerospace and defence mechanisms will be featured including gears, geared systems, electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical sub-systems.&nbsp;</p> <p>Reliance is an established supplier to global prime contractors and OEMs in the aerospace and defence industries. Unlike conventional methods, this procedure is free from any major side effects and studies have shown that 95% of men make a full recovery within a twelve month period.</p> <p>Contributing to Ablatherm's&reg; efficient system performance is the Reliance Cool Muscle intelligent actuator: an integrated drive and control instrument supplied by Reliance Precision Mechatronics.</p> <p>The Reliance Cool Muscle actuator enables the Ablatherm&reg; probe to create a 3D image of the prostate. Urologists then use a PC to identify the area damaged by lesions, and ultrasound waves destroy the affected area. As the product has evolved Thermo Electron has repeatedly drawn on Reliance&rsquo;s linear motion expertise to help them achieve their specified criteria and maintain their accuracy requirements.</p> <p>Thermo Electron&rsquo;s Design Engineers first approached Reliance with an interest in using two leadscrews in their spectrometer design, one to control the prism rotation and the other to control the optical grating.</p> <p>As the AA series developed the designers were also challenged with providing a mechanism for height adjustment of the flame. Engineers at Reliance were able to satisfy this requirement by designing in a screwrail.</p> <p>With both the evolution of the product and the manufacturing world&rsquo;s demand for higher quality yet lower price, Thermo Electron sought to simplify the spectrometer design. Once again turning to Reliance for support, the screwrail was replaced with Reliance&rsquo;s new screw driven RGLS slide. These slides integrate a leadscrew and slide into one neat, space saving package providing an economical solution with fewer parts which also facilitates assembly and gives excellent robustness and rigidity.</p> <p>The RGLS slide consists of an&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/73/thermo+electron+rely+on+linear+motion+expertise+from+reliance Mon, 07 Sep 2009 15:59:00 +0100 State Of The Art Component Cleaning From Super Clean Reliance <p>With over 20 years experience in precision design and manufacture for contamination sensitive industries, Reliance Precision Limited is continually developing by utilizing new technologies and processes.</p> <p>The latest addition to their capabilities is a state-of-the-art automated 13 stage cleaning line. Over these years their facilities have evolved into a state of the art quadrupole manufacturing facility with experienced designers, clean room assembly, inspection and precision cleaning.</p> <p>It is well known that the Quadrupole Mass Filter requires a very high degree of mechanical accuracy. Reliance has developed a computer model of the Quadrupole Mass Filter. This is used to evaluate the design of a Quadrupole Mass Filters against its performance criteria. Tolerance details for size, straightness, orthogonality, symmetry, positional accuracy, curvature, taper, and parallelism can be studied, and tolerances relevant to the customer's application may be stipulated. The model can produce details of ion entrance conditions, trajectories, and exit conditions, as well as representative mass peak shapes. Transmission versus resolution can be rapidly assessed for any design and in doing so, the optimum ion injection conditions can be specified.</p> <p>The manufacturing processes are based around 12mm diameter electrode rods, dimensions and features of which can be produced to sub micron precisions. To match this, the mechanical dimensions of the parts and assemblies can be determined to within a few microns; often using&#8230; 1 http://www.reliance.co.uk/en/news/66/quadrupole+mass+filters
