Reliance Precision Receives Prestigious Health and Safety Award

Reliance Precision Limited has been awarded the RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Silver award.

The safety charity, which has a 57 year history and has the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK, has undertaken an assessment of Reliance's occupational health and safety management systems and culture, and a review of performance in terms of accident rates and number of serious incidents over the last five years.

The scheme not only looked at accident records, but also Reliance's overarching health and safety management systems; including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Andrew Wright, who recently joined Reliance as Managing Director, firmly believes in promoting a strong culture of health and safety in the workplace: "I am delighted that Reliance Precision has achieved the RoSPA silver award. We work hard to keep safety at the front of our minds and it is encouraging to gain recognition for our good work in this area. We will continue to focus on "near-miss" reporting and encouraging all employees to make suggestions to improve safety. This is our way of keeping safety at the top of our priorities and helping retain a good performance."

Apprentices Discover the Value of Teamwork

The Ocean Youth Trust North provides an innovative way of helping young people achieve greater confidence and social skills through the unique medium of ocean sailing. Having recently celebrated 25 years since launch, they estimate that over 10,000 young people have sailed on the vessel; benefitting from the life changing effects of their residential voyages.

Such a busy sailing calendar means that the James Cook undergoes regular periods of scheduled maintenance. This is where Tom Broom, Bradley Jessop and David Black; apprentices from Reliance Precision in Huddersfield, provided a helping hand. The apprentices took a 3 day break from their regular duties at Reliance to join staff and other volunteers aboard the vessel. Docked at the mouth of the River Tyne, they helped perform essential maintenance tasks such as the de-rusting of metal parts on the deck and re-painting.

As well as picking up some valuable practical skills, the apprentices had to use their own initiative. For Tom, it was the first time he had travelled a considerable distance alone and had to organise his own travel arrangements. The scheme highlighted the need for working cooperatively as a team in an environment where everyone took responsibility for their assigned tasks.…

Reliance Hosts Men’s Health Awareness Day

On the 25^th February, Reliance Precision UK and Ireland held a Men's Health Awareness day in memory of an employee who had died recently of cancer. Judith Birley, Vendor Manager at Reliance, proposed the idea as a memorial to her husband, Kevin, who passed away one year ago. Judith and her two daughters, Sarah and Emma, requested the event to be used as an opportunity to highlight the various health issues that surround the subject of men's health.

After contacting Prostate Cancer UK1, the leading charity for men with Prostate cancer, it was decided that employees would raise awareness by wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the charity's logo and by focusing on male specific health issues. A number of female staff work at Reliance, but the nature of Kevin's illness meant the day would be focussed mainly on the men. As well as Prostate cancer, a range of men's health concerns were explored; including heart disease, blood pressure and other applicable types of cancer.

Reliance Precision Appoints New Managing Director

Andrew Wright stepped into his new position last week as Managing Director at Reliance Precision, taking over the helm from Roger Kenworthy.

Andrew joins Reliance having been a Managing Director at Johnson Matthey and previously a European Business Manager at BP. He brings his passion for science and technology and his commitment to the growth of manufacturing to his new role. "I am privileged to join such a strong engineering company, particularly at a time when Reliance is just entering into a significant programme of investment to develop its infrastructure and technical capability. It is an exciting time for the company and I am enjoying getting to know the teams in Huddersfield and Ireland and looking forward to meeting our customers and suppliers."

UK Manufacturer Invests in Aerospace Expansion

Reliance Precision, established supplier to the global aerospace and defence industries, announces a multi-million pound manufacturing investment.

"In spite of the difficult economic trading environment world-wide," observes Managing Director, Roger Kenworthy, "we have seen consistent growth in our business and expansion of our customer base. A new sub-micron machining centre and new ultra high precision turning centre will give Reliance a step-change in technical ability, keeping the company at the forefront of precision component manufacturing. Leadscrew and Nut Assemblies Available Online

Reliance is pleased to announce the addition of leadscrew and nut assemblies to its online store, complementing the standard range of gears, couplings and hardware products.

Reliance leadscrews are available in standard diameters from 3.2mm to 24mm with standard leads from 0.3mm to 92mm. They are precision rolled from a premium grade, corrosion resistant, non-magnetic stainless steel and designed specifically for motion control applications where accuracy is paramount.

There are several nut designs available, many of which are offered with either triangular, round or threaded mounts. The innovative anti-backlash nut design, using self-lubricating polymers, provides assemblies which compensate for wear with low frictional drag torques and excellent positional repeatability. Positional bi-directional repeatability with an anti-backlash nut is generally around 1.5micron, standard lead accuracy is better than 0.0006mm/mm (higher accuracy 0.0001mm/mm is available on request).

Leadscrews can be supplied with end modifications such as bearing journals and mounting features, and proprietary low friction coatings can be specified, which will extend the life of the anti-backlash assembly by up to 300%. Leadscrew nuts can be manufactured to suit specific customer designs.

Clutches and Collars Available Online

Reliance is pleased to announce the addition of the clutches and collars range to its online store, complementing the standard range of gears, couplings, leadscrews and hardware products.

The friction clutches are maintenance free and designed to protect actuators from torque damage. With zero backlash before slipping and adjustable slip torque settings, the clutches are available with either disc springs or wire compression springs. Disc spring versions are available to suit higher torques up to 120Ncm and wire compression spring versions are available to suit lower torque levels up to 30Ncm. Designed with a gear mounting diameter of 10f8 (-0.013/-0.035mm), Reliance's B10 bore gears are suitable. The clutches are manufactured from steel 9S MnPb28 with a black finish for the flange and Nylatron for clutch lining.

The range of collars includes:

One piece stainless steel clamp collars with threaded bore sizes M4 to M10 for threaded shafts.
Single and double width shaft collars do not mark the shaft and are excellent for high axial loads. Available in stainless steel or aluminium with bores from 3mm to 10mm.
One-piece set screw collars manufactured from stainless steel with bores 4mm to 10mm.

The hugely successful range of one piece Reli-a-Flex^® couplings manufactured by Reliance Precision Mechatronics has been specifically designed to provide extremely accurate transfer of motion between two rotating shafts, while catering for parallel and angular misalignment.

The Reli-a-Flex^® couplings are available from the Reliance Precision Mechatronics online store on a short lead-time, with a selected 'preferred range' available ex-stock. Reliance Precision is delighted to welcome a new intake of apprentices. With an EAL approved, on-site training school and dedicated staff, the four year apprenticeship scheme offers recruits an opportunity to develop their mechanical engineering skills to the highest of standards.

The apprentices will spend their first year in the training school, where they will complete an NVQ 2 qualification. They will learn to operate machines from a range of manufacturing areas, increasing in confidence and competence as they work together, learning to problem solve and project manage. The following year will see them move onto the shop floor where they further develop their skills before completing an NVQ 3 in a specialist discipline which suits their strengths and which they enjoy.

Introducing a 36mm Linear Actuator Configuration That Replaces Existing 42mm Packages

This new configuration includes a special adapter plate that allows the smaller 36mm OD unit to replace 42mm and 46mm units in existing applications.

Stringent Quality and Process Control Prevents Contamination

A laser based targeting system in a military aircraft and a mass spectrometer, used for environmental and food safety monitoring, are both applications where contamination in the production process could potentially cause operational failure. Systems and instruments such as these contain complex clean assemblies, often with expensive components which have specific handling and process requirements. Gears with specialist coatings, for example, demand high standards of cleanliness and surface preparation in order to ensure adhesion. Ion transport systems operating in a high vacuum, such as those found in the mass spectrometer, have their own unique set of cleanliness requirements to ensure effective vacuum performance and electrical charging.

High levels of cleanliness and robust process control are often essential requirements of the scientific instrument, semi-conductor, defence and photonics industries, where the effects of contaminants can lead to equipment malfunction and performance degradation. It's All Done With Military Precision

Workers at a Huddersfield engineering firm swapped tools for guns and the shopfloor for wild moorland at a weekend exercise run by the army.

Three staff from Lepton-based Reliance Precision took part with other organisations from across the region in a demanding three-day challenge held on Catterick Training Area near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

It involved working in teams on a variety of challenges such as recovering an overturned tanker, launching a search and rescue mission for an RAF downed pilot, abseiling down a sheer drop and crossing a water course to erect a navy signal.

The exercise, called Merlin Executive was run itself by fellow work colleagues, who also serve as reservists in the Navy, Marines, Army or RAF in units across Yorkshire and the Humber.

The three-day course, organised by reservist unit the 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, was designed to give business people the chance to enhance their personal leadership, teamwork and communication skills, as well as gain a valuable insight into the transferable skills that reservists develop during similar training exercises.

Reliance's 'Cool Muscle' Plays a Major Role in the Fight Against Prostate Cancer

With one in eight men affected before the age of seventy five, and 37,000 cases diagnosed in the UK each year, prostate cancer is by far the most common form of cancer affecting men today.

In what has been described as a 'paradigm shift' in the treatment of prostate cancer, the French company EDAP TMS, in collaboration with Inserm (French Institute of Medical Research), has developed the Ablatherm^® High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which enables a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer. Unlike conventional methods, this procedure is free from any major side effects and studies have shown that 95% of men make a full recovery within a twelve month period.

Contributing to Ablatherm's^® efficient system performance is the Reliance Cool Muscle intelligent actuator: an integrated drive and control instrument supplied by Reliance Precision Mechatronics.

The Reliance Cool Muscle actuator enables the Ablatherm^® probe to create a 3D image of the prostate. Urologists then use a PC to identify the area damaged by lesions, and ultrasound waves destroy the affected area. Unlike radiation treatment, this procedure focuses specifically on the area concerned leaving surrounding tissue healthy and undamaged.

Customised Linear Motion Solutions

Alongside precision couplings, gears and intelligent motion control, Reliance Precision Mechatronics, the UK distributor for Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions Inc, a premier manufacturer of engineered linear motion products, now has the capability to customise linear motion systems for many different types of application. An example of the customisation capabilities to meet a unique engineering requirement is a precision linear rail system developed for an application requiring very high stiffness, accuracy and repeatability.

Along the axial length of the system is a precision recirculating ball rail, which has a high-load capacity and high rigidity. The extruded aluminium frame supports all the components for the system. This particular design, the drive mechanism is a Haydon^{^TM}stepper motor and a precision rolled 303 stainless steel Kerk^® leadscrew. Attached to both the leadscrew and the precision ball rail is a machined aluminium load carriage with an integral Delrin drive nut.

Changing Lives and Inspiring Futures

The Ocean Youth Trust North (OYT North) state proudly in their motto that they: "change lives and inspire futures"; a claim that Eddy Townend and Tom Jones, second year apprentices at Reliance Precision, would certainly agree with having spent three days working with the trust on The James Cook, an impressive 21 metre ocean going vessel, anchored at the mouth of The River Tyne.

The OYT North facilitate a personal development experience which detaches young people from the security of their everyday lives, where mundane chores, once taken for granted, suddenly become their own responsibility: "On the way there, I had to find my way around unfamiliar places and changeable train timetables for the first time," explains Eddy. "When I eventually arrived, I was introduced to everyone and we were given our individual tasks to do. It was all a bit daunting at first, but the staff encouraged us and made us feel part of their team."

Reliance Precision received the SC21 silver award for business excellence at a ceremony in Edinburgh hosted by Selex Galileo Ltd. and organised by ADS, the trade organisation for the UK's aerospace, defence, space and security industries. ADS manage the SC21 accreditation process and the stringent assessment of suppliers working towards the bronze, silver and gold award standards. A number of awards were presented at the event and a common theme emerged from all the companies participating - that the support of employees from across the business is the most essential factor for SC21 success. Roger Kenworthy, Reliance's Managing Director, accepted the silver award on behalf of the company's 220 employees and celebrated this proud achievement with the team on his return to Huddersfield.

At the ceremony Phil Curnock, from the SC21 project office, noted that there are now 540 companies engaged in the SC21 programme, with 55 bronze awards having been presented, 19 silver and 2 gold. Reliance is already planning for gold.

Reliance Precision celebrated the New Year with a second SC21 award for business excellence.

Reliance was presented with the SC21 bronze award at the Farnborough Air Show in July 2010. Since then the company's delivery and quality performance to key customers have been monitored against the demanding quality and delivery criteria set out by ADS, the trade organisation of the aerospace, defence, security and space industries. The silver award requires 99% on-time delivery and 99.5% quality performance, which Reliance delivered consistently across the period, as well as demonstrating improvements in business processes and lean manufacturing.

Reliance is one of only a small number of suppliers to the aerospace industry to have achieved the SC21 silver award. At the end of 2011 just 8 companies of 500 engaged in the programme had been granted the silver level.

This design allows for a small footprint linear actuator system, perfect for precision motion applications where space is at a premium.

The folded-over linear rail contains all the components needed for a complete motion sub-assembly, including the stepper motor, belt and pulley, precision leadscrew, bearing supports, and rail with load carriage. The rail also contains the capability of mounting sensors within the integrated dovetail grooves.

The standard drive ratios available from the motor to the screw are 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2, using lightweight aluminium pulleys and a fiberglass reinforced neoprene timing belt. Reliance Develops Its Young Engineers

One year after completing his apprenticeship at Reliance Precision, Matthew Lodge returned to work this week with newfound confidence, having spent seven days working on board the Stavros Niarchos, a 197ft Tall Ship. His journey from Ipswich to Stavanger, Norway with 30 other 16-25 year olds was anything but a holiday. He worked shifts through the night, doing everything from cooking and cleaning to navigation and steering, facing not only the agony of sea-sickness and the anxiety of working alongside strangers, but also the tremendous challenge of climbing 148ft high rigging. "It was amazing" Matthew said, "something I would never have done if not for Reliance. It did wonders for my self-confidence."

Mick Hallam, Reliance's Training Manager explains: "If we make our youngsters appreciate what they can achieve then we benefit as a company. The Tall Ships is one of a number of exercises we draw upon to encourage our apprentices to step out of their comfort zone and to stretch their own abilities. Multi-Helix Couplings, A Strong Group

Reliance Precision Mechatronics is proud to introduce an extension to its range of helix couplings.

The target was to increase the maximum torque so the couplings could be used for heavy duty measurement applications and in linear drives. In this new version, the higher torque capacity is achieved by using multi-beam helixes, with the largest offering a maximum torque of up to 22Nm. These new couplings combine high torsional stiffness with low radial stiffness, thus protecting the bearings and the shafts of the connected drive parts. The couplings are manufactured in one piece, having no moving parts avoids friction loss and the design guarantees good vibration damping.

The bore of the helix section is standard, allowing shafts to be placed into the coupling without affecting function. Feather key grooves are also available. The couplings can be supplied in a range of sizes with outer diameters from 9.5mm up to 38.1mm and an overall length from 14.2mm up to 66.7mm. Bores are available from 2mm up to 22mm, with clamp or set screw type fixing hubs. Alternative bore combinations are also possible.

Reliance Achieves Independent EPA Certification for Micro-Electronics Handling Facilities

Reliance announces successful certification to BS EN 61340-5-1:2007 for the handling of electro-static sensitive devices (ESDs). The award relates to ESD handling practices across a number of Reliance's manufacturing facilities including its latest, a fully enclosed Electro-static Protected Area (EPA).

The EPA is used to assemble performance critical electro-mechanical sub-systems containing highly sensitive electronic devices. These assemblies require effective handling practices to reduce the risk of contamination and failure.

Static generating devices are prohibited from the EPA and personnel working within the room, their workbenches and flooring are all fully grounded. Regular tests are carried out on the equipment, benches and flooring to ensure they continue to perform to the EPA specification.

Reliance has been active in the assembly of high performance electro-mechanical sub-systems for the defence and aerospace industry for over 40 years. Thermo Electron has used Reliance’s linear products in their AA series spectrometers since 1999. As the product has evolved Thermo Electron has repeatedly drawn on Reliance’s linear motion expertise to help them achieve their specified criteria and maintain their accuracy requirements.

Thermo Electron’s Design Engineers first approached Reliance with an interest in using two leadscrews in their spectrometer design, one to control the prism rotation and the other to control the optical grating.

As the AA series developed the designers were also challenged with providing a mechanism for height adjustment of the flame. Engineers at Reliance were able to satisfy this requirement by designing in a screwrail.

With both the evolution of the product and the manufacturing world’s demand for higher quality yet lower price, Thermo Electron sought to simplify the spectrometer design. Once again turning to Reliance for support, the screwrail was replaced with Reliance’s new screw driven RGLS slide. Mechatronic Tidal Simulation Assists Scientists

Scientists from London's Imperial College are using the new RT3 version of the Reliance Cool Muscle NEMA 23 integrated servo system to reproduce the sub-surface pressure changes created by lunar tides in laboratory research experiments directed at improving oil recovery.

The unique abilities of the RT3 version along with the support provided by Reliance allow the scientists to concentrate on the research without having to spend time controlling and verifying the test system.

The compact closed loop motor system has unique abilities to share I/Os, perform complex coordinated motion and use mathematical notation to perform motion. The onboard memory and logic banks along with the integrated tuners, vector drive, amplifiers, 32 bit RISC processor and 50,000 count magnetic encoder provide an intelligent motor which delivers cool running and smooth motion.

For this application, the motor moves extremely slowly and has been programmed to complete a 400mm long inverse cosine motion profile over a 12 hour 24 minute period using a 0.1" leadscrew. Using this feature the scientists are able to replicate the lunar tides found in underground oil reservoirs for their experiments.

Accuracy across different budgets is the focus of the new comprehensive gear range from Reliance Precision Mechatronics LLP.

For a very economical balance of accuracy against cost, the brass spur gears in the range are designed for less demanding applications where accuracies up to ISO 9/10 are required.

Reliance Precision Limited has over 15 years experience in the manufacture of Quadrupole Mass Filters (QMF) for mass spectrometers. Over these years their facilities have evolved into a state of the art quadrupole manufacturing facility with experienced designers, clean room assembly, inspection and precision cleaning.

It is well known that the Quadrupole Mass Filter requires a very high degree of mechanical accuracy. Reliance has developed a computer model of the Quadrupole Mass Filter. This is used to evaluate the design of a Quadrupole Mass Filters against its performance criteria. Tolerance details for size, straightness, orthogonality, symmetry, positional accuracy, curvature, taper, and parallelism can be studied, and tolerances relevant to the customer's application may be stipulated. The model can produce details of ion entrance conditions, trajectories, and exit conditions, as well as representative mass peak shapes. Transmission versus resolution can be rapidly assessed for any design and in doing so, the optimum ion injection conditions can be specified.
