High speed machining of aerospace components

In recent years aerospace has changed its approach to the design and manufacture of complex components. Where once, several small parts would have to be manufactured to make up the detailed completed part, monolith components are now specified.

The ability to machine these monoliths has arisen from the concept of ‘high speed machining’. Former cast profiles and 3D contours are now achievable by high speed machining operations.

The move to high speed machining at Reliance has required a large investment not only in the cost of machines but also in specialist tooling. The complex machining also demands CNC control with CAM support to achieve accuracy and efficiency at high feed rates.

Reliance makes extensive use of specialist manufacturing cells with dedicated machinery and personnel to achieve reduced lead times on families of components.

By applying cellular manufacture to the high speed machining of complex aluminium aerospace components, Reliance has also achieved high speed manufacture with 60 day lead times reduced to just 5 days.
